How to Store Basil in the Fridge
Fresh basil is known due to its strong aroma, is a versatile herb that enhances many dishes. From pasta and pizza to sauces, spreads, or simply as a refreshing addition to salads or toast.
Basil leaves are very delicate and release a pleasant scent even with a light touch. Compared to other herbs, they are more prone to tearing or bruising, which causes them to darken and lose their appeal. To extend the life of basil, it’s essential to handle and store it gently.
Cleaning and Washing Basil
Wash the basil thoroughly but gently, making sure to remove the rubber band holding the stems together and separating the stems during the wash. Be mindful to take out any leaves that may have been damaged. Shake off excess water carefully, or consider skipping this step altogether to avoid bruising the leaves and just let them dry out.
Packaging and Storing Basil
After drying, wrap the leaves gently in a paper towel without applying any pressure. Ensure the paper towel isn’t too tight, leaving space for the leaves to remain free. You can use a plastic bag or a large container lined with paper towels to help maintain moisture levels. Store the plastic bag or container with the basil leaves in the refrigerator.
Since basil is often used sparingly unless for pesto or spreads, I prefer keeping a small potted basil plant handy for those occasional uses.
