How to make shakshuka
There are many ways to make shakshuka, from the sauce ingredients to whether it is covered while cooking or not, whether to stir or let it sit. Almost every one who tries has his own way of making shakshuka.
Shakshuka is a Middle Eastern breakfast dish, packed with nutritional value. It is usually served in the pan in which it was cooked, alongside various types of bread, and eaten with your hands.
Because there are so many ways to make shakshuka, for me, if there are tomatoes, peppers, onions, and eggs in the pan, it’s a version of shakshuka.
Ingredients:
- Egg – as needed
- Shakshuka sauce – as needed
How to prepare shakshuka sauce:
Start by chopping onions and peppers, either coarsely or finely, according to your preference, and sauté them in a hot pan with a little oil, allowing them to soften.
Add chopped tomatoes, or you can blanch the tomatoes and peel them before adding to the pan. Stir everything together until it reaches the desired consistency, add salt, pepper, and liquids if needed. You can also add concentrated tomato paste. Stir and let the sauce cook for as long as needed, adding more liquids if necessary.
How to make shakshuka:
Once the sauce is ready, or if you are reheating store-bought or pre-made sauce, create small pockets in the sauce with a spoon to make space to lay the eggs in. Once the eggs are added, let them cook on medium-low heat until they reach the desired doneness.
Tips for successful cooking:
Use the back of a knife or another tool to mix the egg whites with the sauce a few times. You can gently stir between the yolks (yellow part) without touching them during cooking. This will help cook the yolks to your desired consistency without using a lid.
There is no need to use a lid. However, if you do use one, be cautious that the eggs can overcook quickly and become like hard-boiled eggs.
Shakshuka upgrades:
After preparing: sprinkle chopped herbs like chives, green onions, parsley, cilantro, and more on top of the eggs.
Sausages or Meat: You can add various types of sausages while making the sauce.
Serve with bread: Serve it with a delicious bread that will soak up the flavors and sauce perfectly.
Good luck and enjoy your meal!
